Probiotics vs Prebiotics – The Important Role Each Play In Your Health

Chances are you’ve heard the word “probiotics” before. It’s become a buzzword in the health community, and rightfully so. Getting your daily dose of this living bacteria and yeast has tremendous effects on the body. Probiotics support gut health, boost the immune system and improve digestion. They’ve also been known to treat urinary tract infections (UTIs) and fight depression and anxiety. While these health benefits sound great, probiotics can’t do it all alone. In order for probiotics to thrive, they need prebiotics.

Many people overlook the importance of prebiotics either because they don’t know what prebiotics are or they think prebiotics are the same as probiotics. However, they are not the same and both play very different roles in helping maintain your health.

Below is a “Probiotics vs Prebiotics” infographic that highlights how they differ, along with a list of foods you should add to your diet.

Along with the fermented foods, certain fruits and vegetables listed in the infographic above, you can also take daily probiotic supplements to balance gut bacteria and boost your overall health. It’s important to note though, regardless of how you ingest probiotics (by food and/or supplements) they still need to feed off prebiotics in order to survive.
